This masterpiece came out in 1974, and I've made it a habit to reread it every 10-12 years. It never gets old, and I seem to learn something new every time I read it. Now that I am older than General Lee was, my perspective is totally…

I'm not much of a military history junky, but Michael Shaara's 1974 novel about Gettysburg is considered a classic. His somewhat novel approach is to avoid too many combat scenes and tell the story from multiple points of view, including…

Author demonstrated an awesome ability to convey the thoughts, feelings, relationships, and motives of men in war. Typically I get bored with a lot of facts and details but in this story every word enriched the action. Even knowing the…

If you're not a civil war buff the narrative can get a little confusing especially at the beginning. Once the battle begins the novel becomes very engaging. I have a rule that when books start quoting shakespeare or the bible( which were…

This was the best civil war story I have ever read!! War books are not my usual cup of tea but my Dad gave it to me said I would enjoy it. He was right! :) The only trouble I had was keeping up on who was charging or attacking where. I…

I read this over Memorial Day weekend. A very moving account that captured the sense of being at Gettysburg during the battle: the risk taking, weariness, anger, sorrow, dutifulness, & bleak humor that go with men at war. This is a fast…
