Put on the coffee pot, whip up a batch of muffins (yes, two recipes are included), and enjoy this thoroughly original tale. Strongly recommended for fans of offbeat mysteries." -Library Journal STARRED review
One day, Corinna Chapman, high profile accountant and banker, walked out on the money market and her dismissive and unpleasant husband James, threw aside her briefcase, and doffed her kitten heels forever. Now she is a baker with her own business, Earthly Delights, in Melbourne, Australia, living in an eccentric building on the Roman model called Insula with a lot of similarly eccentric people.
She and her cat Horatio are quite content with this new life until a junkie falls half dead on her grate, a gorgeous sabra stalks along her alley telling her that she is beautiful, and threatening letters accusing her of being a scarlet woman begin to arrive. Then suddenly Goths, lost girls, fraud, late nights, nerds, and beautiful slavescomplicate life for Corinna. And she still needs to get her bread out for the morning rush. . . .

What started out as a very enjoyable and witty story, ended up becoming a very distasteful foray into bad cryptic sex. Without giving up anything, the wonderful characters in a very interesting apartment building and delicious sounding recipes eventually are overshadowed by something that should have faded to black. I am no prude, but yuck! And no thanks! Won't try another.

Absolutely love this book and series. Corinna Chapman is such a strong character and a great role model for women. She's fat (her word), but happy and unapologetic about it. The storyline is cohesive and entertaining. It's a well written novel filled with lovable and hateable people. I read some review on Amazon and one reader whose main objection was the 'smug' tone of the character and implausibility of Daniel falling in love with a woman like Corinna (ie. a fat woman). I wonder if this reviewer would think the same if this protagonist didn't weigh 100kg. With so much happening in the book, the author could have run the risk of creating a disjointed story, but Kerry Greenwood has a light but firm handle on all the elements and succeeds in weaving a really good start for this series.
