A creative achievement. Cult movies can be a diverse lot--consider Blade Runner v. Rocky Horror--differently appealing to dedicated audiences. The touchstone of this creative piece is cult B-movie The Room, an indie that should be seen (first, if possible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVn-xI9rKNA&has_verified=1) to best consider and appreciate this work. The Room itself is prima facie funny in its pretense as drama, and this send up / doc-mockumentary is often hilarious, yet sentimental, as it showcases how friendship can support personal happiness, growth, and achievement. Fun, funny, and in ways heart warming. A winner.

I have to agree with rationallady. As well, I feel sorry for Tommy W though, he meant for his movie to be taken seriously and failed miserably. I don't think I could ever watch the movie "The Room" - it would be too heart breaking knowing the background.

This is a really weird film. In the beginning I thought this is a really bad movie...but kept remembering this movie is based on a true story. Unbelievable but true!

Based on a true Hollywood story in the making of the 2003 cult film “The Room”, a couple of misfits who met in an acting class became fast best friends. They decided to write, direct, produce and star in their own dream movie after rejected by the LA film industry gatekeepers. With great passion, mutual support and deep pockets, they experienced the magic and misadventures of filmmaking. Though the main characters were the two misfits performed admirably by the Franco brothers, it was about film making at the core. An okay watch but personally prefer more conventional works as “Day for Night 1973 (French)”, “Ed Wood 1994”, “Boogie Nights 1997” and “Their Finest 2016.”

Before watching this, you should probably see "The Room," which has become the definitive cult film of the new millennium, sort of like our "Plan 9" and "Rocky Horror." It would also be worth reading the book, co-written by Greg Sestero, who was in the film. James Franco plays (He also directs! Poorly!) the enigmatic auteur Tommy Wiseau and brother Dave plays Sestero; he's the best part of the movie. It's a lazy, uninspired, and somewhat smug recreation of a movie whose badness is almost transcendent. A lot of the motivation seems to be: Tommy has a funny accent and looks weird. Franco's performance is one note and maybe a little cruel. This is no "Ed Wood." A lot of talented people (Alison Brie, Seth Rogen, Paul Scheer) are wasted. I think a documentary, somewhat along the lines of "Best Worst Movie" (about "Troll 2") would have been far more interesting/worthwhile.

You definitely need to watch "The Room" first. Both are great movies.

This movie is great, it's inspirational and perfectly over dramatic. Especially recommended if you love filmmaking, it gets ridiculous.

This was painful to watch so I turned it off around 30 minutes in.

This film is a disaster about a disaster. Incredibly bad.

I loved this movie. It's the best biopic since Tim Burton's Ed Wood. People who love movies that are so bad their good and how they were made will love this.
