What a wonderful story this is! A story of the magical transformative power of compassion, friendship, and love. A poetic, musical story that dances through time and space, charged with a lightning love of people and language. By the end, I was firmly convinced that nothing is impossible.

A special bond is forged between a boy and girl from very different cultures. Uplifting addition to diversity literature for children.

I'm an adult, this book is designed for juvenile readers. So no surprise I found it very juvenile, perhaps a nine year old girl might enjoy it. I was interested because I've visited the Mixteca several times. The author claims to have lived in San Agustin Atenango, Oaxaca, which inspired this story. She also mentioned coloured sawdust mosaics.

This was a case of "right book, wrong reader." While I can't deny Laura Resau's facility with the craft of writing - the language in this book is gorgeous - I just couldn't get into it. Too twee, maybe.
