"Jance starts her books fast . . . and keeps things moving with cinematic panache." --Los Angeles Times

A puzzling new case has just hit Sheriff Joanna Brady's department, demanding every resource she has at her disposal--as well as help from neighboring law enforcement agencies and the Feds. The bodies of two women have been found at the base of a nearby peak, known to Bisbee locals as Geronimo. Is this a terrible accident, a case of murder/suicide, or a double homicide?

The investigation takes a puzzling twist when Joanna discovers that one victim was a local teacher and minister's wife, while the other was a brilliant microbiologist working toward her Ph.D.--two vastly different women with seemingly no connections to link them.

As Joanna and her team methodically hunt down answers, they begin to uncover a knotty web of sordid secrets and evil lies--clues that take the valiant sheriff down a winding and dangerous road that leads shockingly close to home . . . and close to a desperate and determined killer.

"Jance skillfully avoids the predictable." --South Florida Sun Sentinel

I started reading J. A. Jance about a year ago and have read many of her books in the different series. I have enjoyed everyone of them and this book was no exception. It was a great read and I didn't see the end coming. I would recommend reading this book.

This book had what appeared to be one significant flaw and the entire ending was based on it. Cars used by police officers normally do NOT have an interior dome light that comes on when a door is opened.
I also thought Sheriff Brady's activity level for someone supposed so pregnant was absurd--hiking up and down a steep bluff for example.
Decent story but some rewriting would greatly improve the realism.

I've read all the Joanna Brady books and recommend reading them in order. In this one especially, I loved sharing Joanna's struggles (and successes) as sheriff managing several homicides, as daughter preparing for a funeral, and as a mother both sending a daughter off to college and about to birth another.

good plot twists and turns until the end. however, why is Sheriff Brady portrayed as a mother and soon-again-to-be mother who doesn't seem to "get" that being with her kids as well as the job is a privilege, responsibility and a joy? still would recommend the book
