A hero to some, a traitor to others. Whatever your opinion, this is compelling viewing which reveals the motivation behind the man who put America's intelligence community on notice. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is believable in the titular role, depicting the crisis of conscience that wreaked havoc on his personal life and on America's reputation as the "land of the free". Solid script.

My husband and I both sat down to watch this movie with a relatively open mind but we found we could not even finish it, it was so over the top. It is essentially trying to depict Snowden as smarter than everyone else in the entire organisation. A very disappointing movie, we went from open-minded about Snowden's motivations and actions to being decidedly anti-Snowden. Not worth the time to watch it. Any actual fact checking reveals this movie to be very loosely based on facts. Some may claim Snowden is a hero but we cannot underestimate the lives he put in danger in the process.

For anyone curious about WHY Edward Snowden did what he did, this is a must-see movie. Be sure to watch the bonus Q & A session, in which he participates, via Skype, from Moscow!

Very highly recommended. Gordon-Levitt really captures the character, even his voice is different.

Directed by Oliver Stone in 2016, this 135-minute docudrama depicts a thrilling fact-based tale.
Snowden has done what he was supposed to do as a freedom-loving, conscientious citizen who's fighting against Big Brother.
It is a profoundly well-crafted docudrama you would love to the hilt if you're againt Big Brother.

In the extras is an interview with Snowden that is better than the movie. Please spend the time to watch the Question and Answer session.

Snowden, a proud American, is now forced to live in Russia as an asylum seeker. Every American--regardless of political beliefs--should watch this movie about the continuous surveillance we're now undergoing and Snowden's journey from innocence (what a colleague characterizes as "Snow White") to sharp awareness of the betrayal of our founding ideals. Director Oliver Stone also focuses on his relationship with his girlfriend, a free-spirited artist who both complements him and challenges him to step outside into Real Life. One of the truths: all of our data is captured, analyzed, sold, and used to shape people's lives. A good companion movie may be "The Lives of Others", which notes the almost hilarious development of nearly half of East German citizens spying on the other half. When is enough, enough?
