I actually fell asleep watching this. Bored somewhat. Moved too slow.

In a word this film was "chilling" but not without leaving you understanding how the events in the film unfolded. While I am not comfortable calling this film excellent, it was.

I give it one star. It is simply wanting to be too much and being pretty much nothing. The acting, for whatever it is worth, is admirable. Florence Pugh makes a credible debut. But, over all, this story and film leave me both cold and wanting better.

This film is not based on Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth, it is based on Leskov's Russian story "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District". Leskov's story was the basis for Dmitri Shostakovich's famous opera of the same name, one of his key works, along with the 4th Symphony, that got Shostakovich into deep trouble with Joseph Stalin.

A psychopath was forged when a young woman, incredibly, was left to her own devices in an estate with timid maids and a brutish peasant. Unlike the Shakespearean character, the protagonist ultimately became master of her own destiny: a woman in charge of her own life and property!!!

This movie is not worth your time. Boring, characters, story-line, all of it is too damaging.

A SUPERB movie! While inspired by the famous Russian novel, "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District," by Nikolai Leskov, it deviates considerably from it, especially after the principal protagonists, Katherine and Sebastian suffocate Katherine's husband's young ward. The Russian novella took its title from Shakespeare's homicidal Lady Macbeth. The book inspired an opera by Dmitri Shostakovich, a ballet by Rudolf Brucci, and a Polish and a Soviet Russian films. The acting and scenery are fabulous. What I personally found amazing is that I felt a certain sympathy for Katherine, despite her horrendous acts, because she is so much a victim of her situation. Her husband and father-in-law treat her abominably, and are totally unsympathetic characters. Her husband's ward is an innocent, and sheer greed is the sole motivator for Katherine's cold-blooded murder of the boy.

Interesting story. There are special features. Was this fashioned after a true story? I wonder.

One of the WORST MOVIES I have EVER SEEN!.
I am a well known filmmaker and storyteller, and this is a piece of garbage.
It should also carry a warning of grafic, horrific onscreen murder of a horse in the story--- for animal lovers to avoid seeing. This whole scene could have been done with just the audio and sounds! This was graffic, gratuitous violence that was unnecessary!
Thin story, boring story, loose ends unexplained, no caring for the characters, no resolution to the situation, and injustice to innocent characters, wirst character development ever.
Filmmaking garbage.

Like Wuthering Heights, if Wuthering Heights were a bad stage play. Lady Macbeth could be enjoyed as a 19th century pastiche, like The Piano, but it has only a vague idea of how humans behaved in that era. Maybe the story makes sense in the novella (set in the Russian world of serfs, masters and distant estates), but it does not here. I was continually pulled out of scenes with thoughts like "that couldn't happen" and "she couldn't possibly have done that." The direction is as subtle as an anvil. Look, our protagonist is forced to wear a big dress; see her being tightly laced into a corset! Never mind she has voluntarily worn similar clothes every day of her adult life, and could wear her corset as loose as she pleased -- she is a woman tragically constrained by society and her wicked, one-dimensional husband. Too bad, because the acting is as good as it could be and the cinematography is beautiful. But it makes a silly story look all the more ridiculous.
