R.I.P. Mr. Petty.
This is a great album. I really liked their last album, Mojo, quite a bit too, but this album is a must have. To me, what makes the Heartbreakers such a force is the presence of guitarist Mike Campbell, who is one of the best around. he doesn't kill you with needless solos (though he could do so), but what he does do, is lay down a rock solid ROCK feel to the songs. He's a master. When you listen to songs off this album like American Dream, U get me high, and, especially, Powerdrunk, you can FEEL just how great that guy is. The whole album is very very good. It's worth having this in your collection; there are several songs here that, once you listen to them, will be in your head for weeks.
This is a one of those releases that flew under everyone's radar when it was came out in 2014,but you would be wise to give this a listen.Tom Petty is one of those artists from the 70's and 80's , who toiled for the first few years, made it big, then went under the radar. But now older and wiser these artists are doing some of the best work of their careers. Listen to this or The Last DJ (2002),then go back and listen to Damn the Torpedoes (1979) to hear the difference; this mature work done by a seasoned pro versus his popular work which seems so top 40 fluff now.
"Hypnotic Eye" is a great new album by Tom Petty. As on today their are 57 copies and 2 holds. The album cover alone is a masters work of art. It isn't easy to have artwork that catches the eye like that one.
