" As the experiments progressed over several years, the concept developed that the various physiologic changes that accompanied Transcendental Meditation were part of an integrated response opposite to the fight-or-flight response and that THEY WERE IN NO WAY UNIQUE TO Transcendental Meditation. Indeed, lowered oxygen consumption, heart rate, respiration, and blood lactate are indicative of decreased activity of the sympathetic nervous system and represent a HYPOMETABOLIC, OR RESTFUL, STATE. On the other hand, the physiologic changes of the fight-or-flight response are associated with increased sympathetic nervous system activity and represent a HYPERMETABOLIC STATE." author has expanded edition for anniversary edition. included is an overview of the state of american medicine when he was first approached by the maharishi cult to do experiments on them to determine if there actually were positive health results to be gained from meditating. hint, resistant to the concept. so, he puts the subject in historical context, and you might find this interesting if you have a liberal arts background. if you have a scientific background, you might find the meditation claims interesting. so...... . . . . .----interesting!

A well known book from one of the foremost experts on the psychology and science of stress.

The instructions for doing the relaxation exercise gets a page maybe two. the rest of the book explains the history of his work and benefits of why this topic is important.

You probably wouldn't have picked up the book if you weren't already sold.

So if you want "self help" coping with life's challenges this will not help much. If you want to read about the topic then it may be a help to you.

Just my opinion.
