*I have seen this powerful film many times, and it always leaves me emotionally drained. It is a passion play performed by hippies in the 1970's.
*The barren Israeli landscapes and minimal sets help keep the focus on the characters.
*The artistry--especially the singing of Yvonne Elliman and Carl Anderson--is stunning.
*The combination of ancient and modern elements helps you see how timeless this story is.
*Personally, I find that this film deepens both my faith and my understanding of ancient history, but your mileage may vary.

The commentary track and special features on the disc are worthwhile.

Please note that this DVD contains no opening previews at all.

It was just the retelling of passion week, so I think they got some of the parts right; however, they could've been wrong with what they're thinking - I'm not judging - yet they did a decent job on improvisation. I know I haven't seen an entire movie before, but I found it already mature enough for me to go through by myself. I was curious to listen to the music, for I never heard of it before. Although I enjoyed it, I realized it was a music video version of an album. I was totally thankful for having been inspired enough to finish the rest of my very own story off. =)

If you have not seen it already, nor you were from the 1970s (those born in 1980+) and were missing out like I did, the film's for you!

Extraordinary period piece in more than one way. The high desert/camp staging dynamics remove this from the forgettable world of Broadway fluff. Adds the random personal to great collective imaginings…can be seen as a tribute to self-destructive rock icons (like Morrison, Hendrix, Joplin, Jones) as well as all non-violent martyrs against empire.

I like this, despite the silliness of 1970's musical in the desert. I enjoyed the movie with friends over food, and we had a good laugh. I learned some things I didn't know, like Judas killing himself.

If you don't like opera, but feel Les Miz is the epitome of musical theatre art, you will probably enjoy Jesus Christ, Superstar. However, you may be put off by a tendency to jokiness. It was written well before Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber was knighted, and became completely po-faced.

I watched this movie for the first time in over 30 years and it holds up remarkably well. Great music, great cast, and story is told very dramatically.
Interesting and fun, as well as serious and sad!

Excellent movie!

Violence: Graphic depictions of suicide, torture, and execution. I am surprised that this film is rated G!
