Where did Stefan Zweig get his reputation as a serious author? It certainly isn't in this miserable soap opera masquerading as masterpiece theatre. The hack director, Patrice Leconte, must share a good deal of the blame for the main actors (Rickman, Hall) being totally sexless and unbelievable. In addition, Rebecca Hall would seem to be more fitting for an English soaper rather than a Germanic one. For some reason, this movie has been confused with a totally different movie called "The Promise". Are the reviewers whacked out or is it the library system?
