A challenging, visceral, mind bending exploration of race, politics, and society in our country. Johnson weaves in and out of a post modern structure (or lack thereof), mixing genres-- from dissertation excerpt to fantasy to diary-- creating a funny, confrontational, and deeply affecting story. No one is safe from the biting commentary, and there are no easy answers here. The references, too, take extra effort to collate, but if you're willing to dig your teeth into a kaleidoscopically layered history lesson, this is the book for you. It could not possibly be more relevant today.
