I enjoyed this book overall. If the account of the tribal dynamics was accurate,I feel like I developed a better understanding of the scene over there. The writing style was a bit corny and I laughed imagining Luttrell (or anyone) using the word "tumult". I have yet to hear that one pop up in conversation, including from my more pretentious pals. I will assume some paraphrasing went on inside the quotes to add flair. The author went to great lengths to describe how the Taliban/Russia/America are perceived by the Afghani "tribesmen" like Golub, whose people have inhabited the Hindu Kush in Afghanistan for 2,000 years. I enjoyed the bits of regional military history included in the book and hope they were accurate. Most of all,I wanted to know what happened to Mohammed Golub. His bravery and ethics cost his family dearly. I felt better about human nature knowing such men exist, and it gave me hope that if left to people like Golub, not Taliban or Western politicians, maybe we could find a solution to the existential threat felt by the West.Stop meddling is certainly one suggestion.
