I found this subdued, beautifully lit historical drama very entertaining. Admittedly, Johansson's almost nonverbal portrayal of the meek Griet was rather flat and one-dimensional, with her constant pained and petrified expression. Nevertheless, I was reminded of Cinderella, with the evil stepsister, per se, and the pinched-faced wicked old crone, (who was wise enough to realize that Griet's likeness and inspiration to her son-in-law put food on the table). Colin Firth as the brooding Vermeer and Tom Wilkinson as the lascivious Master van Ruijven were both spot-on.
