The Flame Bearer. By Bernard Cornwell. Bernard Cornwell is an accomplished author of historical fiction who writes in three quite distinct genres. The most extensive is the story of Richard Sharpe, a sharpshooter, set in the Napoleonic Wars. He has also written a number of novels that do not make up any part of any series, the favourite of which is “Agincourt”. And then there are his novels set in ninth century Britain, in that era where the Norsemen and the Angles are vying for control of what is to become England. No need to tell you about the plot except to say there’s gut and gore aplenty and to suggest that no one writes a battle with sea axes, spears, swords, shields more exquisitely than Cornwell. This is the most recent of Cornwell’s novel. What a pleasant surprise to see it come up on my “ to read list”.
