An Ian Rankin mantra atypical story line, where the focus is on the antagonist, an assassin who is a hemophiliac, that is cast to he reader in a somewhat protagonist light. Rankin mixes the assassin's goal of retribution against those who he feels has set-him-up for capture. Supposedly this is a cult who used him to terminate a female reporter who reportedly is an adversary of the cult. The tale weaves into a pursuit and involvement of the assassin by a New York PI, CIA, US and government NSC. Also the storyline has questionable support characters for the assassin whose overall skills and just-in -the-nick-of-time rescues assist in his precarious situations. Finally the tale stretches it's imagination to a questionable and highly dramatic surprise ending.
