Dark Challenge was one of the more creative early Carpathian novels. For the first time, readers get introduced to ancient Carpathian females who have powers to rival the males (though in a different way.) Desari was and is one of the most interesting heroines Christine Feehan ever introduced us to. It was kind of amusing watching Julian have to reconcile the fact that his lifemate could rival him in power, when he was used to having to protect Carpathian females. And she didn't want to be protected. She already had an overprotective older brother; she didn't need an overprotective lover too. It made for a creative dynamic for the series that hadn't been there before. So I recommend this one.
